I'm getting a Shorkie because mixed breeds are healthier and have more hybrid vigor. Responsible Shorkie breeders will not uses this theory to adopt out their Shorkie Puppies. "Hybrid vigor" in dogs is a myth because all dogs are dogs. A hybrid is created when two different species are mixed together, not when two different breeds of dogs are bred together. Get a Shorkie From a responsible breeder that knows the breed Mixed breed dogs are not automatically healthier Puppy Parents need to know this! If any shorkie breeder claims this is a scare tatic they are nuts. We want to inform you and make sure you get your shorkie from a reputable breeder and there are many out there. Shorkies are a wonderful hardy breed if they are bred correctly! Because of genetics, no dog regardless of breed or cross is safe from inherited health issues. A big myth that many less than ethical breeders of both purebreds and Shorkie breeders will use is that their dogs are genetically free of all health issues because they KNOW THEIR LINES. (Please for more on this topic, read reknowned canine geneticist Dr. George Padgett's article in Dog World from January of 1997 where he discusses the over 102 genetic issues that cross bred dogs can have). Hybrid vigor does NOT exists in the crossbred dog or the world of domestic dogs regardless of what anyone states.Well, first, a good Shorkie breeder will screen potential breeding adults for genetics. Since there are many health problems that can be found in various and even all breeds, no breed or cross is safe from them. It is up to the breeder to screen for what they can and have the dogs certified where applicable (such as OFA - Orthopedic Foundation of America and Cerf for eye testing).
